Happy New Year.

I suck at keeping my resolutions. In previous years I pushed for big numbers or goals which would take the entire year to accomplish. For example, ‘Run 1000 miles’ which somehow seems too abstract and too concrete at the same time.
I’d have been better off breaking it down into manageable chunks. Instead of feeling overwhelmed mid-January by ‘Run 1000 miles,’ I could have said run 3 miles every day or 20 miles a week. Smaller failures would impact the overall goal but I’d still be able to reasonably recover day to day or week to week. I need to cultivate consistency, not accomplishment.
So this year, my resolutions aren’t big numbers. I’ve deliberately written them so 2020 is the year of consistency. My resolutions:
- No workout, no whiskey
- Each day read a page from a book
- Write every day
- Stop biting your fingernails when stressed, it’s gross
Suspiciously absent? Anything fatherhood related. If I’m being honest, I’m so new at this #dadlife I am just white knucklin’ it from crisis to crisis still.
I’ll do a month in review at the end of January to see how things are going. Don’t break the streak.
