Normally, we take our summer vacation in August by heading down to the Cape (Cod not Fear) for a week with the family. This year, however, my wife (MYWIFE!) will be 9 months pregnant in August and expects to be parked in front of our newly installed mini-split air conditioners for the majority of the summer.
We decided to move up the trip to mid-June. Cooler temperatures over summer solstice meant less traffic on the two bridges which lead to the peninsula, but the beaches felt like people were making up for lost time with COVID having ruined so many family vacations in 2020.

My takeaway from vacation? Dad fills two key roles:
- Chauffer
- Sherpa
I spent more time driving, dragging and ditching ‘beach-stuff’ than dipping my toes in the water. Man o’ man did the kiddo have a good time. Undeterred ered by gritty sand, cold water and lurking-sea monsters, she strode in to the water immediately upon our arrival and before we put her in a bathing suit.
Another lesson learned:
Always put the kid in her swimsuit before showing her the big, blue ocean.
