Hobbies not Hustles

I’m reading Austin Kleon’s Keep Going, the third of his series which includes Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work. Highly recommend each.

Kleon writes 10 Ways to Stay Creative in Good Times and Bad and in the current chapter a particular line resonated with me.

We used to have hobbies; now we have “side hustles.”

The concept of enjoying your creative hobby without relentlessly pursuing turning it in to more than a hobby helps relieve the pressure, in the case of my personal blog, of worry about how many people might read it and what they might think. What is the ultimate goal of my blog? Enjoyment.

Enjoyment and pride should be internal and that can apply to any of my hobbies: writing, reading and running.
