Who Owns the Night

#Chuck slept alone for the first time in her life last night.

I’d lobbied for the baby to be down the hallway a couple weeks after we brought her home. The #cohabitant had other plans so we kicked the can down the road to the 3-month mark and ultimately executed last night.

The #cohabitant waited to share her anxiety until I made it through a few pages of my book… apparently, even with all of the sleeping rules, we didn’t follow, the separation was too much for her to handle. She wanted the baby back in the room, like now.

Believe me when I say that I try to empathize with all of the emotions with which my wife (MY WIFE!) deals, but when

When it comes to the graveyard shift I reign supreme. Whether it was the gremlin noises during month two or more subtle stirrings lately, the baby sleeps on my side of the bed.  Just inches away from my head, and when it’s time to get up I drag my ass out of bed with only the slightest hesitation and groan.

Was it too much to ask that we move the baby a bit farther away?  I was supremely confident #chuck would shriek if she felt she was abandoned in an unfamiliar room… even if that room had nice pink walls and a bunch of baby decorations that had been unused for 4 months.

Turns out neither the #cohabitant nor my thoughts mattered.  #Chuck was unphased, and she owns the night.  I may think I reign supreme, but she calls the shots.

She just does it from down the hallway now.
